The landscape at the gardens are simply stunning in the winter, offering spectacular views and an unmatched sense of solitude. Come join Jon Genereaux, as your guide, for a unique winter perspective. During the 2.5 hour trek through the forest you will discuss adaptations of trees and plants and their dormancy, animal hibernation, migration, identify tracks in the snow and learn of the many clever ways in which living things survive winter. PLEASE WEAR WATERPROOF BOOTS AND CLOTHING APPROPRIATE TO COLD, WET WEATHER CONDITIONS. Trekking poles, Ski poles, or hiking sticks would be helpful for maintaining a balanced footing on snow covered hilly terrain. YOU WILL BE TREKKING INTO THE DEEPER PARTS OF THE FOREST, OFF TRAILS. That being said, there are also risks. All the perils that come with an ordinary hike are amplified in winter, from difficult uneven terrain, to cold and ice, to slippery steep environments. Not suitable for children under 8 years old. A warming fire, light snacks and hot beverages will be served in the forest with views not seen by many if conditions are reasonable. The forests, though they look to be sleeping are not. Winter forests are a quiet, wonderful place for a trek offering different sensations now than at other times of the year. Snow will crunch under your feet and crisp air will pink your cheeks, so get off the couch and keep cabin fever at bay by heading to Hidden Lake Gardens to find out...... WHAT IS WINTER!
Cost: $15 per person / $13 for Friends of HLG. Call (517) 431-2060 to register.
