Hidden Lake Gardens Winter Trek: Cons...
Description
It can be hard for anyone to see the forest for the trees. However, here in the open canopy of winter at Hidden Lake Gardens, it can be hard to see the trees themselves. They’re such an integral part of the fabric of the setting, like air for humans or water for fish, that they simply disappear into the background if we aren’t intentionally conscious of them. How often do we fail to truly see the trees: the peace instilled by the sight of a branch swaying on a breeze or the treetops dappling sunlight onto the forest floor? Have we taken time to listen to the trees and their remarkable acoustic qualities? Trees speak (really, they do)! Trees leave traces of their lives and the people surrounding them, from their first observation to the present day. Simultaneously, weaving together their own story and science, leaving us with evidence to be witness to their testimony.
So much of the joy of forest trekking comes from the mindfulness it encourages. With no agenda, aside from putting one foot in front of the other, it becomes easy to attend to the present, pause, look up, and behold the backdrop in this winter landscape.
Come, let’s anticipate the unknown together, make our own stories, and chat about the science of trees. This winter trek, guided by Jon Genereaux, is unique and you will need to be prepared for seriously slick conditions as we will be hiking up and down hilly terrain through a thickly woven mosaic of winter woodlands atop ridges and forest flats – most of this trek will be off main trails. With luck, we will catch glimpses of the forest fauna. The trek’s finale, weather permitting, will feature a sneak peek and stroll onto the newly constructed Canopy Walk (public opening pending) seeing the trees like never before . . .
Cost: $15 Member / $18 Non-member / $5 Ages 13-17 (Must be accompanied by an adult.) Trek is focused for adults and may not be appropriate for children ages 12 and under. Limited to 25 participants.
PLEASE NOTE: This 2.5-hour trek does go "off-trail" and will be strenuous because of the topography and slick conditions. Participants must be in reasonably good walking and heart health conditions. Wear hiking shoes or snow boots and dress for the weather. Walking sticks, trekking poles, or ski poles would be very helpful moving through and maneuvering over the terrain. This trek is not wheelchair, walker, stroller or wagon friendly.
In the case of inclement weather, the trek may be canceled, postponed or rescheduled.
